Dear Friends,

As we continue to prepare for the Advent Family Retreats, it’s a time that I typically begin to reflect on the past year.  2009 has been a wonderful year for our ministry.  We have had so many special moments - blessed moments – and we are already anticipating what 2010 will bring.

We have our usual full schedule for 2010 and the Program Brochures are currently at the post office and will be arriving in your mailboxes within the next few days to a week or so.  Please be sure to check your mailboxes and call if you would like some additional copies.  For a sneak peak at our schedule for 2010 – just click here.

Finally, we here at the Center want to extend our special thanks to all of you and wish you and your families a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

God’s Peace to you all,

Anthony

Hospitality House Family Retreat

Through the generosity of the Marianist Sharing Fund, the Marianist Family Retreat Center was able to offer an Autumn Family Retreat weekend to families that are currently in transitional housing or living in a homeless shelter.  The retreat center worked with the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless to provide this weekend of rest, reflection and sharing to eight families from the Coalition.  The theme of the weekend was “Discover the Way” and families were encouraged to discover new ways of dealing with the changes in their family life.  Highlights of the weekend included a trolley ride through Cape May, skits with Captain Marco de Chaminade and a prayer service in which parents verbally expressed their love for each family member.

As Linda Flores-Tober, the director of the Coalition expressed, “the women all said that this weekend was the first time that they have done something fun in years. They were all able to put aside the stress of their lives for two days and just breathe. Each person felt special and touched by the weekend.”

The staff of the Retreat House are excited that a few of the participants on the retreat have now signed up for future retreats and we look forward to giving a follow-up retreat day in the spring at the Coalition.  To see photos from this retreat – click here.

Women’s Spirituality Retreat #3

The final of our 3 Women’s Retreats was a wonderful experience.  The theme of this retreat was The Wisdom of the Seasons.  Taking the external seasons as we see them, the women dug deeper into the seasons that lie within.  Through various meditations and prayer, the women discerned their internal season.  They looked at the wisdom that comes from their experiences in each season, helping them to grow and learn.

Autumn Teen Retreat

The Autumn Teen Retreat was a great bonding experience for the teens.  Our theme, What on Earth Are We Here For? focused on what our purpose in life is.  Through topics including a personal relationship with God to serving God in a community, the teens were able to focus on how to discover their God given purpose.  In a smaller setting, the teens were able to participate in workshops that discussed prayer, community, and being made in God’s image.  This gave the teens a chance to choose what interested them the most.  With some personal reflection, tons of laughter, and great music; the teens bonded over a common journey that they all travel.

The Chapel
by John-Paul Helk

puppets

stars and moons – all glowing

lie back

and gaze at your soul

Jesus hangs over you

ocean roars around you

a slow rolling roar

music and waves

blend mellifluously

someone is speaking

to my heart, to my soul

in the peace, in the stillness

I am with God

John Paul has been coming on retreats here since 2000, when he first came as a 8 year old boy with his family.  John Paul recently attended our Autumn Teen Retreat.

Going Beyond Family Ministry

So many that have been touched by Mary's House and the retreats we offer, but retreat ministry is but one facet of the Marianist Family.  There is so much more depth to Marianist Ministry.  Many of you have been drawn to some of these ministries.  Ted & Jean Gorczyca have been attending retreats here for many years – and have since becomes more involved with the Marianist Social Justice Collaborative.  Click here to read a paper prepared by Ted.

Marriage Moments and Parenting Pointers

Contributed by Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net

On Marriage…

"Married couples: the grace of the sacrament of matrimony and the spiritual power of your vows are available to you daily." (Follow the Way of Love) Remember, you're not in this marriage alone. Call upon these realities and God's power.

On Parenting…

Recently a child opened the door for me at the bank. Nice but not remarkable. Then I noticed her brother racing ahead to press the "Walk" button at the traffic light. Huh? It occurred to me that maybe they were having a "good deed contest." Perhaps you'd like to propose this to your child. For one day, challenge your kids to a "good deed race." It could become a marathon.

Blessings to All!
